Getting noticed at work to set yourself up for a promotion takes thoughtful strategy.

No matter the size of the organization you work for, be it large or small, getting noticed for your work is one sure way to set you on the path of promotion, either at your current employer or another.

Making sure you are getting noticed requires thoughtful strategy, especially if you are looking to get eyes on the skills or traits you’ve identified as important to get the job you want next.

There are many ways to grow your skill set in your current role and get noticed for it.

Here’s what you need to do to get noticed at work:

  1. Do amazing work

First and foremost, you need to ensure you are doing high-quality work. If you are assigned a task, do a great job of it. Follow the instructions you were given to a T.

If you see an opportunity to improve what you are working on, discuss it with your supervisor first.

A mistake people can make trying to get noticed is by trying to innovate everything they are doing. This can come off the wrong way. Share your idea for how you will approach the task first, this will not only highlight your professional communications skills but also your keen understanding of the job at hand.

  1. Know where you want to go in your career

When you have a job, there will be a set of expectations attached to it and you are responsible to work according to it. This is especially true if you work in a union environment where there are strict sets of job classifications that include key responsibilities for each role.

If you are currently working in a role that is not in line with where you want to go, look for crossover areas between the two where it would be possible for you to make a pivot. If you have the education for your next role but not the on the ground experience, you will want to pay special attention to the skills you have in common.

  1. Seize any opportunity to expand your skills and development

Many employers offer professional development programs. These programs are excellent opportunities to share your career thoughts and identify skills you want to develop. Often  these programs include debriefs and reviews with your manager or supervisor. Prepare for these meetings by highlighting areas in your job where you went above and beyond, and find alignment with company values.

If you are looking to nab a job within the same organization, get to know the company values and use them to your advantage as you develop your plan.

  1. Be thoughtful in meetings and share your ideas

Team meetings are great opportunities to get noticed at work. Team meetings are full of updates from people in different roles. This is a key way to learn about what others in the organization or team are working on. If there is an area where you can help, take the chance and offer your skills.

Getting noticed at work takes thoughtful strategy. By highlighting the skills you need for your next job, you will be able to demonstrate your initiative and drive with professionalism and grace.
